Alvin Up to 87.5 Lbs
June 27,2002
Alvin is doing much better, He has gained weight (is up to 87.5 lbs now) and doesn't have near the crustiness all over he had. Becky went to another vet and we have new bloodwork values...again, improving on most of them. Today's blood work shows more improvement I think and at least this vet doesn't see any liver problems.
ALB = 2.24 LO (2.70-3.0) [IMPROVE]
BUN = 52.9 HI (7.0-27.0)
AMYL>2500 HI (500-1500)

GRAN = 11.5 (3.3-12.0) [NORMAL]
NEUT = 9.0 (2.8-10.5) [NORMAL]
EOS = 2.5 HI (0.5-1.5)
The ALKP, ALT, CHOL, WBC, L/M, TBIL, and MCHC are all within normal ranges.
The PLT is high at 574 (175-500) now
The urninalysis today showed some protein in the liver, but I don't have the sp gr numbers and there is some color to the urine, not completely clear like water now.Alvin is eating some kibble along with chicken (cooked) and veggies. Becky has agreed to go with the paratox treatment for heartworms WHEN it is ok to treat for that. Right now we are all just trying to get him healthy enough. The new vet did put Alvin on some steriods, Winstrol V tablets, with the notation to be on the lookout for change in muscle mass, aggression or possible increased appetite. Of those, I would choose number 3...let's get more weight on this little boy <G>
Thanks all,

Some of ya'll have asked me
about his bloodwork numbers. Granted, some of
this might not mean a lot to some folks, but I bet it will to your vet <sly
grin> so please, feel free to ask your vet's opinion of these numbers (i.e.
print this email and take to vet) and report back. <G>
I, personally, see some improvement...some of the high values, while still
high, are not as high...some of the high values are now within normal limits,
so that tells me there is definate IMPROVEMENT <VBG>
Here are the values:

Since Alvin is gaining weight, feeling better, looking better, I HAVE to
believe we can save this boy. Yes, he is anemic, but gee whiz, wouldn't you
be if you had been starving for oh, let's say 6 months? After all, Alvin did
not get in this condition in a day, a week or even one month...it took a long
time for him to get in this bad of shape and quite frankly, I'm very
optimistic with these numbers.
Thanks everyone!

Hi Everyone -
Sorry it has taken me so long to write, I have a hard time getting to a
computer. I want to thank everyone who has helped with Alvins bills. YOU ALL
are his ANGELS, John and I could not do this alone. Alvin is very happy at
home and loves to lay around watching T.V. I have received 16 letters and
Alvins savings account is now up to $445.00. As you have probably already
heard, Alvins blood work did not come back the way we wanted it to. John and I
are not going to give up, we have him on medication, lots of prayers, and extra
LOVE!! Thanks again to everyone for all the help I will try to do better at
updating you on whats going on with our boy Alvin.

Hi all,
Becky just called. The bloodwork came back on Alvin today shows severe
liver and kidney damage. The vet called it liver and kidney failure. Becky is
trying to get me a copy of the lab work so we can check with other folks who
have dogs in CRF and see what we can do to make him better. Alvin is in
wonderful spirits and a happy boy now that his daddy is back home.
Sadly,
Anne
